Alternate Transportation Issues

Posted by Anonymous User at Mar 06, 2008 08:54 AM
I live in Brandon and live less than 5 miles from work. I have been considering riding my bike to save on gas used since I am so close. My two route options are to take SR 60 west passing the freeway enterances or Grand Regency to Woodbury. Both options have HUGE safety concerns, something that is seen throughout the area.

Both of these roads have sidewalk access, up to a certain point. SR60 the sidewalk and bike lane both end at Grand Regency. Woodbury has a sidewalk only for about half of the road leading to Falkenberg. It's not unusual here in Brandon to see a bike lane or sidewalk suddenly end. I have seen sidewalks that just stop and one is suddenly in grass or dirt. I have seen them suddenly stop and not be even with the ground so there is a slight drop. I have also seen sidewalks at a street that do not have a ramp, only a curb.

I believe more people would ride bikes if the roads were safer. Roads are not only safe for a biker, but also for those who may relie on physical assistance such as a wheelchair. If the Tampa Government is truly concerned about going greener, taking a look at road planning would help in this. It would help by making sure there is sufficient bike lanes and sidewalks when roads are being created or widened.

Alternate Trans Issues

Unfortunately the politicians, designers and constructors of roads are primarily automobile users. Many of them , in fact, are rabidly anti bicycle, anti pedestrian. This is because they are degenerate. They have no interest in evolving as creatures who have any sort of connection with mother earth. Good luck.

Saving fuel and alternative fuel workbook...

Posted by at Aug 21, 2008 08:37 PM
Check out this workbook my brother just wrote (I got the beauty he got the brains LOL) It covers everything from how to measure the amount of energy that your car really needs!! (as opposed to how much gas it eats). It also shows you how to measure the difference of energy used at low speeds and high speeds, lets you calculate the engine’s energy efficiency, and how your car’s energy compares to other things like energy in your home. The measurements are really easy to do. It also compares and explains the use of solar panels, wind power and electric cars and hybrids and relates the amount of energy produced to everyday use. At last an informative workbook that links all this information in an easy to calculate and understand fashion.

Going Green and our Government

Posted by at Sep 01, 2008 10:45 AM
Now that both running mates have been chosen and the presidential election heats up American's are left to sort out which candidates will better address the ever burdening issue of the energy crisis in America. The energy crisis is directly linked to our economy. Foreclosures are on the rise as well as unemployment. With all the technology available it is incredible to believe we have not come together as a nation to devise a plan. We have become so dependant on foreign oil that we have neglected to fully utilize such natural sources of energy such wind power & solar power. Along with modern technology such as plug in cars, hybrid cars, v2g technology ,and regenerative braking, technology we still seem to be floundering as a nation as to devising the best plan utilize all that is available to us and lift ourselves out of this mess we are in.

Tampa Bay receives TogetherGreen Grant!

Posted by at Nov 06, 2008 09:49 AM
Hi everyone!

My name is Lorraine and I'm posting today on behalf of the National Audubon Society and a remarkable project called TogetherGreen and the initiative taking place in Florida!

You are probably wondering what exactly TogetherGreen is. It's all about helping people get involved in creating a brighter, healthier future. This Audubon program funded by Toyota aims to provide inspiration, leadership and opportunities that inspire people everywhere to take action at home, in their communities and beyond to improve the health of our environment.

It’s no big secret that we must take care of our environment today for the success and well-being of our future generations. Forty-one projects in 24 states will receive TogetherGreen Conservation Innovation Grants totaling $1.4 million dollars. Winners were selected from applicants nationwide for their innovative approaches at inspiring people to tackle environmental problems in their communities. With the help of a Toyota funded TogetherGreen national innovation grant, volunteers from the St. Petersburg and Clearwater Audubon Societies and Eckerd College will work together enlightening people about the risks of disturbing beach nesting bird colonies during the summer nesting season. A one-year grant will fund the program and will be put into motion during peak beach season in 2009.

The five-year TogetherGreen initiative was just launched this past spring to fund conservation projects, train environmental leaders, and offer volunteer and individual action opportunities that significantly benefit the environment. Community volunteer days have already begun in over 40 cities across the country and www.TogetherGreen.org helps users take conservation action and share and celebrate conservation success stories.

I wanted to inform everyone about TogetherGreen and especially about the grant in Tampa Bay. It is our hope that as the year goes on we see awareness and participation continue to increase. We would love for you all to be a part of the reason. To view photos of the TogetherGreen initiative, please visit our page on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/togethergreen

If you visit www.TogetherGreen.org you'll discover volunteer opportunities and conservation actions you can take alone or in groups to make a real difference in shaping our future. Soon, there will be opportunities to win prizes through volunteer action. You can also nominate deserving individuals and conservation projects for online recognition, helping inspire others to get involved.

Please let me know if you need any further information. Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Best,
Lorraine

A New “Green” Restroom Sanitization Service in Tampa Bay…

Posted by at Jan 26, 2009 02:52 PM
Recently, UniFirst Corporation developed a restroom sanitization service, GreenCleen, to provide any company/business, restaurant, school, or medical center with the means to sanitize their restroom(s) in a green, eco-friendly way.

The GreenCleen technician performs a five-step process that deeply cleanses the restroom and drastically reduces and removes germs, bacteria growth, dirt and unwanted stains.

The thick-technology-foam that is used in this process is 100% biodegradable and is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The service started in Tampa in 2008 (it originally began in Charlotte, NC) and has been rapidly spreading and replacing traditional methods of using harmful (and not as effective) cleaning agents.

solar power

Posted by at Mar 01, 2009 10:31 PM
I live in St Pete and am the very first 5kw solar home in the city. I have 24-210 watt PV panels and I have just added a 40 vacuum tube solar hot water system. I generate an extra 20 kwh per day that I sell back to the power company. I'm looking to find other folks interested in becoming more energy efficent and go solar. I wish to network and share my many ideas

Green Options for Countertops

Avonite Surfaces has 8 colors of solid surface that contain a minimum of 40% recycled content, the most in the industry. We were the first to introduce this almost 15 years ago (before it was cool to do). We are also only made in the USA.
